Perazzi HPX RSR/DSR The Philosophy

The HPX RSR and the DSR are new, radical and highly controversial designs challenging the traditional way of shotgun handling and performance that has become a standard for nearly 2 century’s. The sight picture presented by both models is substantially better than a conventional shotgun, the amount of target vision and peripheral vision allowing greater target acquisition is immediately apparent. One only realizes these advantages on either versions of these guns when placing them to the shoulder and shooting them.

DSR - 2015

12 GAUGE DSR SPORTER

Describing the difference between the RSR or the DSR and a conventional sight pictured gun has been referred to as quite literally revelatory to experience. As the designer, I am staggered as to how easy it makes all targets from all clay disciplines through game shooting, rough shooting, wildfowling or grouse shooting and pigeon shooting too. It makes so much more sense of telling you what you are doing when you pull the trigger. It actually tells you more of where you are going right or wrong and also if you have a slightly weak master eye with the opposite eye tending to take over from time to time, the RSR/DSR really offers some corrective help –target acquisition becomes more obvious.

12 GAUGE RSR SPORTER GAME COMBO

OK I can hear you saying – not another new design that purports to be something new and special which turns out to be just a variation of what has become a shooting standard for the last 100 years. Well, this really is something different and I invite all dissenters to come and see for yourselves and prove me wrong. The RSR/DSR design is based on a slightly reversed slope to the top rib which effects the sight picture allowing a completely un-cluttered view of not only the target, but also all that is going on around the target which benefits the shooter on all targets and helps with focusing onto a second shot where necessary too.

The RSR is now being enjoyed by many shooters world wide and the results and reports from many satisfied customers are substantial to say the least. There have been several competition shooters putting in some winning scores and now that this new design is being universally accepted, expect to see an HPX RSR/DSR taking pride of place in your area soon.

The HPX SR1 is the original HPX design and this model will remain strongly in the HPX line up for those shooters who prefer the traditional sight picture. The SR1 design also outperforms most of the competition again allowing improoved target vision but if you are able to take advantage of the new RSR/DSR concept, the new RSR/DSR way of shooting and the new RSR/DSR shooting experience, then whether it’s for game or clays, come and give my HPX RSR/DSR a trial. I guarantee you will at least be highly surprised.

Here is a Brief Explanation of my Philosophy

I have had the idea for a new and different way of shooting and sight picture when using a shotgun for some years and early in 2012 I plucked up enough courage to put this new design to the test and the results so far are beyond my expectations.
Basically, the better and clearer the sight picture when using a shotgun, the better the results. Many shotguns have a high raised part of the breech where the barrels join the action sometimes blocking full vision of the target. The original HPX SR1 shotguns have alleviated this to a great extent which has made an immediate improvement to eye target contact and the original HPX SR1 rib projects the eye well above the breech also allowing better vision of the target contributing to their great success.

Now however, I have taken this further. Take your present shotgun and mount it in the normal way firmly into your shoulder and cheek. Now place your little finger on the top of the rib at the breech end of your gun when you have mounted it into the shoulder and cheek correctly. Now raise your head until you can see over your little finger and then remove your finger keeping your head in the raised position.

This now presents a high tapered vision of the rib with no interference from the breech blurring the view to the target. This is roughly what is witnessed with the RSR/DSR. The front sight now stands high (and for those who do not want to use a front sight at all, the front end of the rib) and elevated well away from the breech giving an amazing sight picture and pointability to the target not experienced before.

Keeping the sight picture this high with a conventional shotgun would actually present the shot pattern some 12 – 24″ high at between 30 – 40 yards, not a good idea.

Not so however with the new RSR/DSR. With the amount of vision now witnessed, the RSR/DSR gun will shoot to point of aim and not high. This is truly amazing and I believe, a totally new concept as to serious shotgun shooting. In a nut shell, you can now see an unusual amount of rib tapering away from your eye sloping up to whichever point you prefer to shoot by (the front sight or the end on the top rib) but the shot pattern with this RSR/DSR system now shoots flat or to exactly where you are pointing the gun. In other words, POA (point of aim) means POI (point of impact).

Does it really work?

Here is my first experience. On its first trial I attended a local club where there is a good skeet layout and I thought that this is a good test to see if the RSR really works.

Straight out, I reached stand 4 without dropping a target after which I was experimenting with some variances of style to see how the RSR dealt with other ways of shooting and dropped the first followed by another during the round. Not being my favourite discipline, 23 for me was pretty good for a new gun. For me, I shot these targets really well. I then went to the sporting layouts and could not believe the results.

I shot a 50 yd crosser with superb vision and dropped 1 out of 10. I also shot at a 40 yd rabbit as I thought this may present a problem with this new concept. I shot 10 straight. I missed a couple of close curlers (in front which got corrected pretty quickly) and polished off a going away target also without a miss.

It really does work incredibly well and for the first time ever, I can see more of the target than I ever thought possible. There are plenty of high ribs on the market many of which do a really good job allowing you to keep your head well up also allowing for some increased vision. The RSR/DSR however, is not the same as these high ribs in any way. The RSR/DSR allows you to see an amazing new sight picture of the target without ANYTHING getting in the way and without shooting high too.

Call me for a trial and check out this amazing new concept and highly specialized shotgun to see if it works for you. Any customers who have purchased a standard HPX during the last 6 months can upgrade via a complete gun exchange system with no money loss, just a balance difference.

Gun Fit and the RSR

The HPX RSR in its various forms is as mentioned many times here, quite controversial but the results and reports from many customers are now cementing its place in the shotgun world, its design being well respected and admired. However, the fit of the RSR is also quite controversial and although it mostly conforms with conventional shotgun measurements, the comb height is totally different. The superb high sight picture which the RSR allows has to be used with a high comb adjustment and this initially sometimes confuses the end user. Some RSR customers have been admired by their colleagues at a shoot and have been asked by onlookers for a chance to inspect the virtues of this special design. The comments relayed back to the owner have sometimes been to the effect that ‘this cant possibly work as it is much too high’. In these cases, any individual looking at the gun without prior knowledge as to the RSR design philosophy, has not understood the principle and has in some cases un-nerved the owner thinking they have got the wrong fit. It is paramount that the comb of the RSR gun must have a high fit and in all cases, please do not adjust this measurement without referring to me as any serious reduction of comb height will render the RSR POI incorrect. I guarantee my shotgun fitting on all HPX guns so if there are any adjustments to be made, this is where my subsequent inspections and service is invaluable and at all times, please call me to check if you are not sure that your fit is correct. Once understood, it will be immediately apparent as to how the RSR shoots and just how effective it is. Please don’t take outside advice from in-experienced shooters with the best will in the world.
